Episode Transcription

The expression I want to teach you today is “mixed bag.” Mixed bag. That's mixed—m-i-x-e-d—bag—b-a-g. Mixed bag.

What is a mixed bag? A mixed bag is a thing or a situation that has good things about it and bad things about it. Imagine a bag that is filled with a mixture of different things. It’s filled with an assortment of different things. It’s filled with some things that are like this and some things that are like that. It has all different kinds of things in it.

Let me give you an example of something that we might describe as a mixed bag.

Let’s say you have just started a new job, and after your first week on the new job, your friend asks you, “Well? What do you think of your new job?” And you answer, “Well, it’s kind of a mixed bag. I like a lot of my coworkers. They seem very friendly and very good at their jobs, and I think I will learn a lot. But I don’t like my boss very much. My boss does not seem to know a lot and doesn’t seem very friendly.”

So, that situation is a mixed bag because it has some good things in it and some bad things in it. It is a mixture. It has some of this and some of that. It doesn’t have only one kind of thing.

And that’s the end of episode 135 of Everybody ESL.
