The episode

In this episode, I am going to tell you about an expression that you might have heard before. The expression is “Keep up the good work.” Keep up the good work. That’s spelled keep: k-e-e-p, up: u-p, the: t-h-e, good: g-o-o-d, work: w-o-r-k. Keep up the good work.

What does it mean if someone says, “Keep up the good work”?

Let’s start with the end of this expression: good work. What does good work mean here? Good work means “good performance at something, doing something well, doing some activity well.”

This could be something at your job or at school or any kind of activity that you can do well. I think we usually use it when we are talking about some kind of action or activity that requires some effort.

That is the end of this expression.

Let’s look at the beginning of this expression: keep up. What does keep up mean? In this expression, keep up means “continue, continue doing something.”

When we put those two parts together, “Keep up the good work” means “Continue doing something well.”

This is something that people say when they want to praise or compliment somebody for doing good work. This is something that a boss might say. Or a coworker. Or just a friend. This is a very nice thing to hear and a nice thing to say. It means “I see that you are doing well. You are performing well, you are doing something well and putting effort into it. And I am encouraging you to continue. You’re doing well, and I think you can continue.”

That is “Keep up the good work,” a good expression that I think you should know.
