The episode
In this episode, I am going to teach you an interesting, useful, and very common expression. And that expression is “So far, so good.” So far, so good. That’s spelled s-o f-a-r, s-o g-o-o-d. So far, so good.
What does it mean when we say, “So far, so good”?
Let’s look at the first part first: “So far.” What does this mean? “So far” means “up until now, up until the present.” It’s not talking about the future or anything that will happen after right now. It just means “up until now.”
And we use “So far, so good” to mean “up until now, things are good. Up until the present, things are still okay. Things are going well. Everything is good up until now.”
Let me give you an example of a situation where someone might use the phrase “So far, so good.”
Let’s say that your friend has started to take a French class. And one day, you ask your friend, “How is your French class? Do you enjoy it? How is it going?” And your friend answers, “So far, so good.” So far, so good. That means “Up until now, things are going well. Things are still good.”
And your friend is saying, “I don’t know what will happen later. I don’t know what will happen in the future. But for now—up until right now—things are still good.”
That’s what it means when we say, “So far, so good.” It means “Things are still going well, but I don’t know what will happen later. I don’t know what will happen in the future. But so far—up until now—things are still good.”
And that is “So far, so good,” a very common, interesting, and useful expression that I think you should know.
