Intro

“Hi, guys. This is Elieden Estevam from São Paulo, Brazil. And you are listening to Everybody ESL.”

Welcome to episode 324 of Everybody ESL, the podcast for everybody who wants to improve their English, practice their English, or just learn more English. My name is Ben, and I have a mini episode for you today, where I am going to teach you about one English topic. You can subscribe to the Everybody ESL podcast at Apple podcasts and wherever you find your podcasts. If you like Everybody ESL, leave it a good review so other people can find out about it too. And if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for me, please send an email to EverybodyESL@gmail.com. Okay! Let’s get on with this mini episode.

The episode

In this episode, I am going to teach you about two words that look similar, sound similar, and mean similar things. But it is important that you know how to use these words correctly.

The words are advice and advise. Advice and advise. Let’s start with advice

This word is spelled a-d-v-i-c-e, and you can hear that it ends with an S sound. We spell it with a C, but we pronounce it with an S sound. Advice. Advice.

Advice is a noun. Advice means “a suggestion.” If you give somebody advice, you are giving somebody a suggestion. You are telling somebody what you think they should do. You are telling somebody a good thing for them to do. You can hear this word in a sentence like this:

“I hope you will take my advice when I tell you to study hard.” I hope you will take my advice when I tell you to study hard.

Let’s look at that second word now. That second word that I wanted to tell you about is advise. Advise. A-d-v-i-s-e. We spell advise with an S, but we pronounce it with a Z sound. Advise. Advise.

Advise is a verb, and it means “to give suggestions to somebody or to give advice.”

You can see that these words mean very similar things. Advice is a noun, and it means “suggestion.” And advise is a verb and it means “to give a suggestion or to give advice.”

It might be a little bit difficult for you to hear this difference—the difference between advice and advise—but it is an important difference. Of course, you will be able to see the difference when you read these words because the words are spelled differently.

That is advice and advise, a pair of words that are important to know but that can be confusing.

Outro

This is the end of episode 324 of Everybody ESL.
