The episode

In this episode, I am going to teach you how to say that you have a good opinion about somebody. Of course, there are many ways to say that you have a good opinion about somebody or that you have good thoughts about somebody. But I’m going to teach you one good way to say this.

If you have a very good opinion about somebody, you can say this: “I think highly of that person.” I think highly of that person.

That’s think, highly: h-i-g-h-l-y. Think highly.

You might not expect to see the word highly there. But this is the expression. This is a good way to say this: “to think highly of someone.”

Let me give you an example of a situation where somebody might use this expression.

“Have you met the professor yet? I have taken classes with him before, and I think very highly of him.” I think very highly of him. That means “I know this professor, and I think he’s great. My opinion of him is very good.” I think highly of him.

Let me ask you this: What do you think the opposite of this is? What if you have a very bad opinion about somebody? How would you express that? You might think the opposite of highly might be lowly. Maybe I can say, “I think lowly of that person.” No, that doesn’t work. I think that is a good idea. I understand that way of thinking, but no, we never say that.

In fact, the opposite of “think highly of” is “think poorly of.” Think poorly of. P-o-o-r-l-y. To think poorly of. And we can also say, “to think badly of.” Badly: b-a-d-l-y.

If you have a very good opinion about somebody, you can say you think highly of them. And if you have a bad or negative opinion of somebody, then you can say that you think poorly or badly of them.

Think highly of, think poorly of, think badly of. These are all good expressions that I think you should know.
